Supporting Breast Cancer Recovery with Lymphedema Therapy & Dragon Boat Racing

Breast cancer treatment can leave lasting effects—physically and emotionally. One common side effect is lymphedema, a condition causing swelling in the arm, chest, or breast due to impaired lymphatic flow.
Working with a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) can significantly improve recovery. CLTs provide specialized care, including manual lymph drainage, compression therapy, exercise, and education on self-management—empowering clients to reduce swelling, improve mobility, and feel more in control of their healing journey (Stout et al., 2012).
An unexpected, evidence-backed boost to both physical and emotional well-being? Dragon boat racing!

Originally developed as a rehabilitation tool for breast cancer survivors, this full-body paddling sport builds upper body strength, enhances lymphatic flow, and fosters community.
Research has shown that participation in dragon boat racing improves shoulder range of motion, reduces fatigue, and supports psychosocial health (McKenzie & Kalda, 2003; Harris, 2012).
At Magothy Therapy & Wellness, we believe recovery should include both clinical support and joyful movement. Whether it’s a one-on-one therapy session or a local dragon boat team, your path to wellness can be powerful and empowering.
